Advanced Dehumidification Solution Transforms West Sussex University Sports Hall
Here at Newsome, we’re proud to announce the successful implementation of an advanced dehumidification solution for a university in West Sussex. The university’s large PVC sports hall was experiencing significant challenges due to condensation on its structural steelwork and ductwork, creating dangerous slip and trip hazards for users of the facility. Compounding this issue was the inadequacy of the existing air handling unit (AHU), which failed to maintain acceptable air quality, particularly during high-occupancy events. The situation called for an innovative and efficient solution, and that’s exactly what we delivered.
When we were approached to address these challenges, we started with a thorough assessment of the facility’s requirements. It was clear that the issues went beyond simple humidity control. The sports hall needed a system capable of handling variable occupancy levels, accommodating up to 300 people during large events such as concerts, and as few as 100 during day-to-day activities. The existing system wasn’t fit for purpose, particularly in controlling rising carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels during high-occupancy events. Additionally, the university wanted to avoid installing additional heating systems while ensuring the solution would integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure.
After extensive analysis, we designed and installed a state-of-the-art DST industrial dehumidifier tailored specifically to the sports hall’s needs. The system’s advanced capabilities allow it to address condensation, control humidity, and maintain air quality simultaneously. The integration of dew point and humidity monitoring ensures consistent performance, while the inclusion of a CO₂ sensor adds another layer of sophistication. This sensor actively monitors air quality and triggers fresh air intake whenever CO₂ levels exceed a pre-set threshold, such as during high-occupancy events. What’s more, the incoming fresh air is dehumidified before being circulated, maintaining optimal conditions even as the demand fluctuates.
From an operational standpoint, this dehumidifier is a standout performer. It operates efficiently under standard conditions, primarily in a closed-loop mode that recirculates and dehumidifies internal air. For larger events, the system seamlessly adjusts to incorporate fresh air, balancing ventilation requirements with energy efficiency. This dual functionality ensures that the facility remains safe, comfortable, and compliant with air quality standards, no matter the occupancy.
The installation process was carried out with precision to ensure minimal disruption to the university’s operations. The DST dehumidifier was positioned to integrate seamlessly with the existing ductwork, creating an unobtrusive and professional finish. Every aspect of the design was carefully considered, from airflow optimisation to energy-efficient operation. The result is a solution that not only meets the immediate challenges of the facility but also positions it for long-term reliability and efficiency.
Feedback from the university’s facilities management team has been overwhelmingly positive. They noted significant improvements in both air quality and safety. The once-pervasive condensation on the steelwork and ductwork has been eliminated, and the facility is now a safer environment for all users. What’s particularly gratifying is the feedback regarding the system’s ability to maintain air quality during large-scale events, providing peace of mind that their sports hall can handle even the most demanding usage scenarios.
The project also aligns with our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. By operating primarily in closed-loop mode under normal conditions, the system minimises energy consumption without compromising performance. This not only reduces operating costs but also contributes to the university’s broader environmental goals.
