Enhancing Climate Control for a Leading Premier League Retail Store: A Newsome Success Story
At Newsome Ltd, we take pride in delivering innovative HVAC solutions that not only meet but exceed the expectations of our clients. Recently, we completed a challenging and rewarding project for a prominent retail store in Liverpool, operated by one of the Premier League’s leading football clubs. This project involved upgrading the store’s outdated and unreliable cooling system, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a comfortable shopping experience, no matter the season.
The Challenge: When we first engaged with the client, it was clear that their existing HVAC system was struggling to meet the demands of their busy retail environment. The store’s old Bluebox water-cooled condensers were not only nearing the end of their operational life but were also dependent on a cooling water supply from the shopping centre that was no longer adequate. This resulted in inconsistent cooling, particularly during peak periods, affecting both the store environment and customer satisfaction.
Our mission was to design and install a new cooling system that could provide reliable, efficient, and consistent temperature control, regardless of the external water supply challenges. The solution needed to be robust enough to handle the store’s high traffic and varying temperature requirements while being energy-efficient and future-proof.
Our Solution: After thoroughly assessing the situation, we proposed a comprehensive two-phase solution to address the store’s cooling needs:
Phase One:
The first step was to install a new water-cooled chiller system that would operate independently of the shopping centre’s cooling water loop. This new chiller was designed to deliver a significant cooling capacity of 134.4kW, ensuring that the store could maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the year.
Key Features:
Advanced Cooling Technology: The new system uses a 30% ethylene glycol and 70% water mixture, providing efficient heat transfer and reliable operation.
Energy Efficiency: With an impressive Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 3.280 kW/kW and an Extended Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ESEER) of 6.570, the system is designed to keep energy consumption low while delivering top-notch performance.
Flexibility: We included a changeover valve arrangement that allows the system to switch between the shopping centre’s water loop and a new dry cooler loop, giving the client full control over their cooling options.
Phase Two:
In the second phase, we focused on further enhancing the system’s performance by installing a dedicated dry cooler unit on the roof. This addition was crucial for ensuring that the store’s cooling needs were met, even if the shopping centre’s water supply was insufficient.
The dry cooler was designed with the store’s specific requirements in mind, featuring a cooling capacity of 163.14 kW and a sound pressure level of just 69.3 dB(A) at 10 meters. This ensures that the system operates quietly and efficiently, without disrupting the store’s environment or the shopping experience.
Overcoming Challenges: One of the primary challenges we faced was the unreliable cooling water supply from the shopping centre. By introducing an independent chiller system with a dedicated dry cooler, we were able to remove this dependency and provide the client with a reliable and consistent cooling solution. Another challenge was the limited space available for installing the new equipment. Our engineering team meticulously planned the installation to fit within these constraints while ensuring that the system would be easy to maintain and upgrade in the future.
The Results: The results speak for themselves. The new chiller system has transformed the climate control within the store, delivering consistent and reliable cooling that enhances the overall shopping experience. The store can now maintain optimal temperature conditions, even during the busiest times of the year, ensuring that customers remain comfortable and engaged.
The dual-loop capability of the system provides the client with the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions, ensuring that they are prepared for any future challenges. The project was completed on time and within budget, with minimal disruption to the store’s operations.
Why It Matters: This project is a great example of how tailored HVAC solutions can make a significant difference in the retail environment. By addressing the specific challenges faced by our client, we were able to deliver a solution that not only solves the immediate problem but also provides long-term benefits in terms of energy efficiency, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
