New 400 kW Chiller Delivers £50,000 Annual Energy Savings & 200 Tonnes of CO₂ Reduction
Newsome has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of a new high-performance 400 kW chiller at a major confectionery manufacturing site in York. The upgrade marks a significant milestone in the client’s environmental strategy, combining improved process reliability with substantial reductions in operating costs and carbon emissions.
The new chiller provides precise, demand-driven cooling for the Dumoulin chocolate coating pans on the production line. By replacing ageing, inefficient units, the system now delivers consistent temperature control while operating at significantly lower energy input. The result is a more efficient production process, a reduced maintenance burden and a step change in long-term sustainability performance.
One of the most notable outcomes of this project is the scale of the measurable savings achieved. The upgraded system is delivering approximately £50,000 in annual energy cost reductions, a clear demonstration of the impact that modern refrigeration technology can have on operational expenditure. In parallel, the chiller is contributing to a yearly reduction of around 200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, supporting the site’s ESG targets and reinforcing the wider organisation’s commitment to carbon reduction.
These improvements stem from the chiller’s intelligent control logic, including adaptive loading, targeted temperature modulation and advanced efficiency optimisation. The new system responds to real-time production demand, ensuring cooling is delivered precisely when needed while avoiding unnecessary energy use. This provides far greater stability and efficiency than the previous equipment, which had become increasingly unreliable and costly to operate.
Newsome supported the project from initial technical discussions through to full turnkey chiller installation and commissioning. The delivery team ensured that all work was completed with minimal disruption to production schedules, coordinating closely with on-site teams and specialist contractors throughout. The successful integration of the new plant reflects Newsome’s experience in designing and deploying high-efficiency cooling solutions for temperature-critical manufacturing environments.
The chiller installation forms part of a broader improvement roadmap. The next phase, already in planning, will focus on the upgrade of the site’s Air Handling Unit to enhance energy recovery, optimise airflow and further reduce environmental impact. Together, these upgrades represent a major step forward in creating a smarter, more efficient and more sustainable production facility.
This project is another example of Newsome delivering proven, measurable savings through energy-efficient and environmentally responsible engineering. With rising energy costs and increasing ESG expectations, organisations across the UK are seeking trusted partners who can deliver tangible improvements to their process cooling, heating and environmental systems. Newsome remains at the forefront of this work, combining technical expertise with a commitment to sustainable innovation.
If your facility is exploring options for energy-efficient chiller replacement, process cooling upgrades or carbon-reduction initiatives, the Newsome engineering team is ready to help you achieve the same level of performance, savings and environmental benefit.
