Newsome Delivers Innovative Chiller Installation for Premier League Football Club’s Retail Store at Liverpool One

Newsome, a leader in process temperature control, humidity control, and HVAC solutions, has successfully completed a complex chiller installation project for a prestigious client in the retail sector. The project, carried out for a leading Premier League football club based in the city, involved upgrading the HVAC system at the club’s flagship retail store in one of the UK’s most prominent shopping centres, Liverpool One.

The client, a prominent football club with a global fanbase, faced significant challenges with the existing cooling system at its retail store. The store’s aging Bluebox water-cooled condensers, which were integral to the air handling units (AHUs), had become increasingly unreliable. The situation was further complicated by the shopping centre’s cooling water supply, which was insufficient to meet the store’s needs. This led to inconsistent temperature control, negatively impacting the shopping experience and operational efficiency. Recognising the need for a robust and reliable solution, the client engaged Newsome to design and implement a new HVAC system that would address these challenges and provide long-term reliability.

Newsome’s engineering team conducted a thorough assessment of the existing HVAC system and identified the key issues affecting performance. The Bluebox condensers were not only approaching the end of their operational life but were also hindered by the inadequate cooling water supply provided by the shopping centre. This resulted in suboptimal cooling, particularly during peak periods. To overcome these challenges, Newsome proposed a two-phase solution:

The first phase focused on installing a new water-cooled chiller system that would operate independently of the shopping centre’s cooling water supply. The new chiller, equipped with advanced technology, was designed to deliver a cooling duty of 134.4kW, significantly enhancing the store’s temperature control capabilities.

Key features of the new chiller system include a 30% ethylene glycol and 70% water mixture, ensuring efficient heat transfer and operational reliability.  The system boasts an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 3.280 kW/kW and an Extended Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ESEER) of 6.570, making it both powerful and energy efficient. A changeover valve arrangement was included to allow the system to switch between the shopping centre’s water loop and the newly installed dry cooler loop, providing operational flexibility.

The second phase involved installing a dedicated dry air cooler unit on the roof, which required permission from the shopping centre’s management. This unit was designed to further enhance the cooling efficiency and ensure consistent performance, regardless of the shopping centre’s water supply issues. The dry cooler was specifically engineered to handle the store’s cooling needs, with a cooling capacity of 163.14kW and a sound pressure level of just 69.3 dB(A) at 10 meters, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

One of the primary challenges was the unreliable cooling water supply from the shopping centre, which had previously compromised the store’s HVAC performance. Newsome’s solution involved bypassing this dependency by introducing an independent chiller system with a dedicated dry cooler, ensuring consistent and reliable cooling irrespective of external factors. Another challenge was the limited space available for installing the new equipment. Newsome’s engineering team carefully planned the installation to fit within the spatial constraints while ensuring easy access for maintenance and future upgrades.

The installation of the new chiller system has transformed the retail store’s climate control, delivering consistent and reliable cooling that enhances the shopping experience for visitors. The new system’s dual-loop capability ensures that the store maintains optimal performance regardless of external water supply conditions, providing peace of mind to the client. The project was completed on time and within budget, with minimal disruption to the store’s operations. Newsome’s innovative solution not only addressed the immediate issues but also provided a future-proof system capable of supporting the store’s HVAC needs for years to come.

This successful project underscores Newsome ‘s ability to deliver bespoke HVAC solutions that meet the specific needs of high-profile clients. By leveraging extensive engineering experience and a deep understanding of temperature and humidity control, Newsome has provided a leading Premier League football club’s retail store with a reliable, efficient, and adaptable cooling system. This case exemplifies Newsome’s commitment to excellence in delivering tailored HVAC solutions that enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
